Artists In Residence

The Artists in Residence programme enables each school in the former Tower Hamlets Neighbourhood of Wapping to employ an artist (or artists) to enrich the educational experiences of their students.

By involving all schools in the local area, the programme has helped to make the case that creative activity brings significant benefits to both pupils and teaching staff.

Although there are other programmes and projects available to fund art in schools, none are so open to the wishes of the school. The school determines the format, the medium, the artist and the way in which the artist will work with the school. Indeed, this is the reason for the huge variety in the projects, and it remains one of the most valued aspects of the scheme.

The best arts projects have had a liberating impact on the schools where they have taken place. They have introduced the idea that it is okay to take a risk.

What the school has learnt from St Katharine’s funds is how to adapt to opportunities, how to act creatively
