Evening Standard's £1m Plea

July 2010.

The London Evening Standard has launched a £1 million fundraising campaign to tackle inequality in London.

This is a joint fundraising and grant-making initiative with Community Foundation Network (CFN) involving nine London-based Grassroots Grants funders, including St Katharine & Shadwell Trust.

There are two elements of the campaign, each supported through a dedicated website:

1. Endowment

The Evening Standard has set a target of raising £1million for London’s dispossessed communities, with the Government committing to match more than what is raised. This means the appeal would raise more than £2 million to help Londoners out of poverty.

Donations have already begun to pour in and every Londoner has been urged to join the fight against inequality. All funds raised will be collected by CFN and distributed to each local funder.

2. Grant-making

Voluntary and community groups can apply for grants of up to £5,000 through the Evening Standard’s online application system. Applications from groups in the City of London, Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets, will be managed by St Katharine & Shadwell Trust.

Grants will be made to projects that tackle one of the following criterias:

1. Training and education for people who have dropped out of mainstream education
2. Getting people into work (e.g., apprenticeships or mentoring schemes)
3. Fighting gangs, knife and gun crimes
4. Improving mental and physical health and well-being
5. Addressing other manifestations of poverty (e.g., homelessness, working poor)
